Abstract: The security situation in Europe has changed due to the protracted Russian-Ukrainian war and the migration crisis. These challenges faced by the EU member states are unprecedented and call into question its prospects for existence as a single security community and a mechanism for ensuring the collective defense (collective security) of Europe and actualize discussions about its functionality and prospects for existence in a post-bipolar world. As a result of the research, we determined that the collective security mechanism of Europe within the framework of the EU is a complex system of legal acts and institutions covering mostly EU member states, especially those that are also NATO members. In its turn, the North Atlantic Alliance, being the world’s largest military-security alliance, has a significant influence on Europe’s collective security mechanisms, which it puts into action with its military and defense capabilities. Modern security challenges, which in Europe are personified by the Russian Federation, force the mechanism of collective security of the EU to be improved by the method of formation of new security structures, which are devoid of chronic diseases of NATO and the EU. The object of the study are the mechanisms for the collective security of Europe within the framework of the European Union. The subject of the study is the structure and functionality of the mechanism of collective security of the European states within the framework of the EU. The aim of our study is to analyze the mechanism of Europe’s collective security within the framework of the European Union. The basis of this study was several groups of sources and literature. In most cases, with the exception of sources (normative and legal documents), the literature on the work includes articles by foreign and Ukrainian authors who study the collective security mechanisms of the EU and NATO and other regional security and economic and political associations of Europe. Among them were the works of individual scientists, as well as program documents of NATO and the EU, such as the Brussels and Washington Treaties and the 1957 Treaty on the Formation of the ECSC. It was determined that after the necessary modernization of the existing structures and the strengthening of the influence of their newly created counterparts, in the future the system of collective security of Europe within the framework of the EU will be able to function more effectively, outside the framework of the North Atlantic Alliance, assuming a greater number of obligations and functions of a security nature. Key words: collective security, mechanism, NATO, EU, Russian-Ukrainian war, military conflict, armed forces, legal act, institutional basis, evolution. References: Александров О.
