Plagiarism in Public Speeches of Politicians

Abstract: This study is devoted to the analysis of the concept of plagiarism and its legal nuances. The first section analyzes the history of plagiarism; basic interpretations and understandings of this concept during different epochs of history; the modern definition of plagiarism and the legislation of certain countries in which plagiarism is mentioned are considered; classifications and types of plagiarism proposed by Ukrainian researchers are considered. The second section analyzes in detail the concept of plagiarism and the consequences of illegal borrowing that can await politicians; the most famous cases of plagiarism in public speeches of politicians on the example of the USA are considered; the main theoretical and methodological aspects of the concept are analyzed. The third section is devoted to the Ukrainian experience, in particular, the most famous cases of plagiarism in public speeches of Ukrainian politicians are considered; the main theoretical and methodological aspects of the concept are analyzed on the example of cases; the main results of the sociological survey are presented; depicts and describes the main aspects that affect the reputation of the politician. The study allowed us to draw conclusions: the problem of illegal borrowing has existed since ancient times, this problem was treated indifferently and did not attach any importance until the middle of the 17th century; due to the development of technology and the Internet, plagiarism is becoming a problem not only in written works, but is increasingly found in the texts of public speeches of politicians; the fact of illegal borrowing among politicians often ends in scandals, which can damage the reputation of politicians; the most prominent cases of plagiarism in public speeches concerned US politicians; Among the cases analyzed, Joe Biden’s reputation suffered the most, while other politicians managed to successfully end high-profile scandals; the situation in Ukraine differs significantly, as in all cases the politicians did not bear any punishment for the fact of committing a plagiarism; the poll emphasizes that most of society is indifferent to the problem of plagiarism, and others do not understand all the nuances of the concept; it follows that the accusations made by society of politics in the case of plagiarism may not be substantiated at all by law, but the reputation of the politician may suffer.
