Professional activities of Ukrainian military journalists in the context of the Russian armed aggression against Ukraine

Abstract: The master’s study highlights the features of the professional activities of Ukrainian military journalists in the context of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, the role of military journalism has grown significantly. In general, the demand in the society for information about the Armed Forces of Ukraine has significantly increased. Information about what is happening in eastern Ukraine has been especially popular for the past seven years. The public’s attention is focused on military journalists, who must skillfully collect information from the war zone, process it properly and publish it in the media. The object of the study is military journalism, which is now an important part in the formation of knowledge in society about the Armed Forces of Ukraine in general and information about events in eastern Ukraine. The subject of the research is the features of the professional activity of military journalists in the conditions of the Russian armed aggression against Ukraine. Objective: to provide a functional description of military journalism in general and to identify features of the professional activities of military journalists in the context of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine. A review of scientific papers and journalistic materials is carried out. The object of study is military journalism. It is pointed out that this issue has been actively discussed in scientific discourse since 2014, which was caused by Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine. The main characteristics of professional competencies of military journalists and press officers are considered and summarized. The main legal, normative and regulatory requirements for specialists in gathering information and coverage of events taking place in Eastern Ukraine are identified and described. It is emphasized that the main components of journalists’ work are the search for information, its comprehension, the choice of genre in which the journalistic text will be created (informational, analytical, journalistic material), and the creation of a text adapted the the main demands of the audience. It is noted that the traditions of professional training of military journalists in Ukraine have been interrupted. However, it is emphasized that this specialty can now be obtained at the Department of Military Journalism at the Military Institute of Taras Shevchekno National University of Kyiv. The specifics of the educational process are outlined, the requirements for entrants seeking to master the professional skills of military journalists. The paper identifies the main features of specialized mass media, such as ArmiyaINFORM, UkrainianMilitaryPages, Armiya FM, Viys’kovyy Navihator and other. Information requests of the audience for which military journalists work have been revealed. Particular attention is paid to the study of professional activities of military journalists through the prism of life and creative biographies of a number of individuals who significantly contribute to the formation of knowledge about the Armed Forces as a whole in Ukrainian society, Ukraine’s defense against external threats, protection of sovereignty and territorial integrity, about Joint Forces Operation(JFO) and the people who are guarding over peaceful life in our country. The professional activities of special correspondent of TV channel 1+1 Andrey Zaplienko, head of press service of the International Center for Peace and Security Vitaly Ilyk, journalist Evgeny Analog, author of book «Divchata zrizayyut’ kosy» are described in particular. Analyzing the peculiarities of the professional activities of Ukrainian military journalists in the context of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, we conclude that this problem needs further study. The problems of functioning of specialized mass media, the training of military journalists and the special features of the professional coverage of the Russian armed aggression against Ukraine remain relevant for research.
