Determining the average traffic speed and queue length before intersection using modeling methods

Abstract: The purpose of the work was how traffic conditions affect the change in the length of car queues (especially at complex regulated intersections in Lviv). The length of the queue of cars in front of the intersection is affected by various factors. It mainly includes: the duration of the green light (allowed signal) in the total duration of the traffic light cycle, the composition and intensity of the traffic flow, the parameters of the intersection and the condition of the road surface. Speed is the most important parameter of traffic flow. It has the greatest impact on traffic safety and determines traffic performance. The object of the study is the intersection of Shevchenko-Yaroslav Mudry-Pstrak streets and the intersection of Shevchenko-Levandivska streets. At each intersection, a field study was conducted and the main indicators were collected: traffic intensity, traffic composition, density and speed. To determine the impact of unevenness of the road surface on traffic flow indicators, an intersection with unsatisfactory road conditions in the main direction was chosen. The subject of the study is the change in the length of the queue and the speed of vehicles in front of and in the zone of the regulated intersection, depending on the degree of unevenness of the road surface. Research methods. Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics. The VISSIM simulation software product was used to study controlled intersections and determine queue length and vehicle speed. It was studied how traffic conditions affect the change in the length of the queue of cars (especially at complex regulated intersections in the city of Lviv). The length of the queue of cars in front of the intersection is affected by many factors. Among the main ones, it is possible to note: the duration of the green (permissive signal) in the total duration of the traffic light cycle, the composition of the traffic flow, the intensity, the parameters of the intersection and the condition of the road surface. Speed is the most important parameter for traffic flow. It has the greatest impact on traffic safety and determines traffic performance. In order to determine the impact of the unevenness of the road surface on traffic flow indicators, computer studies were conducted on the basis of field studies conducted at the intersection of Shevchenko - Yaroslav Mudryho - Pstrak streets. Another intersection considered in this work as an object of research is the intersection of Shevchenko - Levandivska streets. The change in the speed of the traffic flow in the main direction at intersections under different conditions was studied. On the basis of field studies, the intersection of Shevchenko – Yaroslav Mudryho – Pstrak streets in the unregulated and regulated state and the Shevchenko – Levandivska street intersection in the regulated and unregulated state were simulated in the PTV VISSIM software environment. The obtained results reflect the change in the speed of traffic flow along the main direction of Shevchenko Street. The unsatisfactory state of the road surface is observed throughout the street. However, the condition of the road surface is the worst in the area of the intersection itself. What is shown by the graph of the change in the speed of movement under the current state. Since the speed of traffic on the lanes does not change, further studies were conducted only on one lane of traffic on each of the variants of the traffic organization of the intersection. On the basis of these conclusions, graphs of the change in traffic speed along the main direction of Shevchenko Street at the intersection of Shevchenko – Yaroslav Mudryho – Pstarka streets were constructed. Similar calculations will be carried out in the main direction of the intersection of Shevchenko – Levandivska streets. The results of the obtained speeds of traffic flows for different methods of regulation were obtained by modeling in the VISSIM program. And at the last stage, the change in the number of stopped cars on the approaches to the intersection in each of the options was investigated. In this study, the unevenness of the road surface has a significant effect on the number of cars that stopped at least once. At an unregulated intersection with an unsatisfactory road surface, the average queue length is 5 times longer than with a satisfactory road surface. At a controlled intersection, this indicator is twice as large. If we consider the maximum length of the queue, then at an unregulated intersection with an unsatisfactory road surface, this indicator is 3 times greater than with a satisfactory condition of the road surface. At the regulated intersection, this indicator is 1.5 times higher. Similarly, for the number of cars that stopped at least once.
