Graphic style of mythological motives in children’s book design

Abstract: The topic of the research is the graphic language of mythological motifs in the design of a children’s book. The field of illustration of children’s book publications is relevant in the context of modern education, and in the case of mythology, it is through the combination of literary text and visual art that the world of cultural traditions and legends is revealed to children. The object of the study is Ukrainian mythology and children’s illustration. The purpose of the study is to determine the peculiarities of thematic illustration for children’s book publications, to investigate the influence of illustration on the perception of mythology and the information offered in general by children’s minds. The first chapter examines the history and development of illustration as a full-fledged form of graphic art and the development of Ukrainian children’s illustration. The role of illustration in the development of children, its influence, functions and features are determined. The current state of the market of printed publications for children is analyzed. It is determined that the market is developing very well and is able to offer many quality products. Analogues of book publications for children on the topic of mythology are collected and analyzed. Their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the peculiarities of stylistic solutions of illustrations in this area are identified. The second chapter examines mythology in culture and art, the role of mythology in shaping Ukrainian identity, and ways of creating children’s illustrations on the theme of mythology. It is determined that mythology is one of the main components in the formation of society into a nation. Mythology is an integral part of the culture of any nation and greatly influences the development of oral and applied arts. The ways of creating a children’s illustration on the theme of mythology and the main features in the choice of technical means, compositional and color solutions are identified. The third section describes and substantiates the concept of design and illustration content development for the children’s book edition “Myths of Ukraine”. A questionnaire survey was conducted among children aged 6-10 years and a response was formed about children’s ideas about the characters of Ukrainian mythology. The author’s compositional and stylistic solution for illustrating the publication was formed. Materials, technical means and solutions for creating illustrations were selected. The original layout of the printed edition was developed in its final form. The fourth section describes and calculates the scope of work performed and the estimated cost of the project.
