Learning outcomes: As a result of the module studying students will know: • the basic types and classification of planar optical waveguides; • the physical principles of light propagation in planar optical waveguides; • the structure and principle of operation of integrated optical components and devices; • the methods of manufacturing of integrated optical components; • the methods of control and measurement of parameters of planar optical waveguides.

Summary of the subject: Basic types and classification of planar optical waveguides. Electromagnetic theory of wave propagation in thin film optical waveguides. Surface electromagnetic waves in homogeneous planar waveguides. Surface electromagnetic waves in inhomogeneous planar waveguides. Interaction of modes in planar optical waveguides. Optical losses in planar waveguides. Passive components of integrated optics. Methods of manufacturing of passive components and measurement of their parameters. Integrated optical light sources and photodetectors. Integrated optical modulators and deflectors. Applications of integrated optics and current trends.
Assessment methods and criteria: • written reports on calculated and graphical works, oral examination, written test (30%) • final control (70% control measure, exam): written-oral form (70%)
