Learning outcomes: - Knowledge of the basics of theories of analysis and study of transients; - Ability to form mathematical models of basic elements of power systems; - Understanding the ways of further development of research methods and tools; - Ability to analyze emergency situations and choose adequate mathematical models for transient research; - Understanding of theories of overvoltage development in electric power systems and means of protection against them; - Ability to study and predict the magnitude of overvoltages and their statistical characteristics.

Summary of the subject: General information about transients, their causes and consequences. Formation of mathematical models of basic elements of electric power systems. Modes of operation of neutrals of electric power systems. Electromagnetic transients taking into account the influence of synchronous generators power plants. Transients during the occurrence of longitudinal and transverse asymmetry. Static stability of the power system. Dynamic stability of power systems. Stability of load nodes of electric power systems. Basic theories of overvoltage development. Internal overvoltages and their statistical characteristics. External overvoltages and their statistical characteristics. Overvoltage limitation. Basic electrical characteristics of air and linear insulation. Discharge voltages and reliability of transmission line insulation. Methods of feasibility study of insulation levels.
Assessment methods and criteria: • written reports on laboratory, course work, oral questioning (30%) • final control - exam: written and oral form (70%)
