Summary of the subject: Quantitative vs qualitative tradition in empirical sociology. Theoretical and methodological principles of collecting quantitative sociological information. Procedures of conceptualization and operationalization. Survey method: general methodological features. Method of content analysis of documents. Method of observation. Experimental method. Qualitative approach in sociological research: preconditions, history of formation, theoretical origins. The place of qualitative research in the system of sociological knowledge. General methodology of research project in the system of "qualitative sociology". Qualitative methods as a philosophical guideline of the researcher. Features of the logic of the sociologist's actions in conducting a qualitative study. Preliminary preparation of "quality" research and implementation of the plan in the field. Program and cycle of qualitative research. Classification of qualitative methods. Case study research strategy / tactics. Historical and biographical research: oral history, life history, family history. One-on-one in-depth interviews as the main active method of obtaining information in qualitative research. Theoretical aspects of the group interview method. Types of text analysis in qualitative sociology: narrative, interpretive, intent analysis, discourse / frame analysis.
Assessment methods and criteria: • current control - performance and protection of individual tasks, test control, frontal survey (40%) • final control - control measure (exam) written examination (50%) and oral examination on the issues of examination ticket (10%)
