Learning outcomes: The course «European Studies» is a diverse programme for students with a broad interest in the cultural, historical, political and social aspects of Europe and the on-going integration process. Rather than being trained in a more narrowly defined field, students are introduced to a variety of disciplines and perspectives on Europe in its widest sense, including insights and methods from economics, history, international relations, law, philosophy, political science and sociology. European Studies offers a learning environment in which staff and students from various countries can share their perspectives. This helps to create a community in which different ideas, experiences and opinions can be exchanged in order to achieve a better understanding of European and international issues. The main results of the course study will be as follows: • a basic overview of the development of the idea and identity of Europe, which can serve as a broad historical framework for understanding the process of European integration as it has occurred after 1945; • advanced knowledge the specific characteristics of European history, notably in comparison with that of other (non-European) societies; • an understanding of a focus on Europe in its widest sense, on questions related to the European continent at large, not only on questions related to the EU; • advanced knowledge of the academic literature and the scientific community related to European Studies; • advanced knowledge of governance issues related to European integration and their relevance for building stable peace in Europe; • advanced knowledge of the complex processes of political, social, economic, and cultural integration in Europe; • the capacity to critically evaluate the relevance of the neofunctionalist approach to European • integration for building stable peace in Europe and its possible application to other regions; • the capacity to independently conduct research and to professionally present the research results, both in research teams and in individual research projects; • the capacity to analyze, research, and solve new and complex problems methodologically from an interdisciplinary perspective; • intellectual creativity and the critical power of academic judgment; • the ability to communicate, coordinate and organize in a multicultural team; • the capacity to discuss relevant issues and problems related to current research results with experts as well as laypersons.
