Learning outcomes: • to know the basic concepts of the theory of optimization and modern methods of mathematical modeling applied to the problems of electrical systems; • the ability to choose and apply optimization techniques for mathematical modeling of electrical devices and systems based on the results of the physical and mathematical experiments and for the research into the practical problems of electrical engineering using modern software; • the ability to analyze the operation modes of electrical devices based on the results of mathematical modeling and optimization techniques.

Summary of the subject: Optimization approach to solve of electrical engineering problems. Classic optimization problems, classification of optimization methods and scope of their application. Modern software tools intended for solution of optimizing problems of electrical engineering. Solution methods for functions of single and several variables. The methods of linear programming, simplex method. Transportation problem.The methods of nonlinear programming. Direct search method. Gradient methods. Stochastic optimization techniques. Monte-Carlo method. Multicriteria optimization. Solution of typical tasks of electrical engineering using the optimization approaches. Operation research.
Assessment methods and criteria: • written reports on laboratory course, oral questioning (40%); • final control (control event – exam): written and oral form (60%).
