Learning outcomes: To know: -the main mechanisms of solidification, diffusion, solid state phase transitions and strengthening of engineering alloys; - relationship between composition, structure and properties of alloys; - technologies of different types heat treatment of alloys. Be able: - to apply this knowledge in simple tasks of design and manufacture of tools and machine parts; - to select appropriate alloys and strengthening methods for machine parts and tools according to the operational conditions; - to make choices optimum technologies of heat treatment to improve durability and operational reliability tools and components of machines and devices.

Summary of the subject: Structure and bonding of atoms in materials. Structure of crystalline solids. Polymorphism and allotropy. Crystallization from the melt: thermodynamic conditions, physical nature and kinetics of nucleation and crystal growth, modification. Directional solidification. Metallic single crystals. Amorphous metals. Crystalline imperfection: point, line and planar defects. Plastic deformation by slip and twinning. Fracture. Mechanisms of strengthening in metals: graine size reduction, strain, solid solution and precipitation strengthening. Recovery, polygonization, recrystallization and grain growth. The effect of time, temperature and strain on recrystallization. Diffusion mechanisms and factors affecting diffusion. Fick’s first and second laws. Types of phases and phase diagrams. Eutectic, peritectic and eutectoid transformations. Thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transformations. Isothermal and continuous cooling transformation diagrams. Classification of heat treatment processes. Diffusion, recrystallization, stress-relief annealings. Phase transformations in Iron–Carbon alloys. The theory and kinetics of pearlite, martensite and bainite transformations. Effect of alloying elements. Stress-induced martensite formation. Heat treatment technologies of steel: annealing, hardening, tempering, surface quenching. The theory of strengthening of nonferrous alloys by solution treatment and aging. Heat treatment of titanium and aluminium alloys. Shape memory alloys. The influence of composition, fabrication methods, heat treatment and deformation conditions on shape memory effect.
Assessment methods and criteria: 1. Current control: interviews during the laboratory works, written reports, essays on the topic of individual assignments (30%); 2. Examination: written-oral form (70%).
