Tool Materials

Major: Materials Science
Code of subject: 6.132.03.M.063
Credits: 6.00
Department: Department of Materials Science and Engineering
Lecturer: PhD, Associate Professor Alexei Bilous
Semester: 6 семестр
Mode of study: денна
Learning outcomes: Following the completion of the module the student should: - know the classification of modern tool materials according to various criteria in order to use them for the manufacture of various instruments; structure and properties of different groups of tool materials and their changes in the temperature range of operation; change and improvement of the materials properties due to mechanical and heat treatments that will provide optimal technological and operational properties of the tool. - be able to apply knowledge of tool materials for forecasting, selection and production of a particular type of cutting, stamping, measuring tool; assign processing to obtain optimum properties and complex structures that would ensure long-term and reliable operation of the instrument; analyze the phenomena that occur in the operation of instruments; evaluate their behavior in the operation and identify the causes of its destruction.
Required prior and related subjects: pre-requisite: Physics; Manufacturing Technology and Materials Processing; Metal Forming. co-requisite: Metallurgy; Theory of the Structure of Alloys; Heat Treatment.
Summary of the subject: Tool materials, their classification. Tool steels, classification, marking, chemical composition, purpose. Tool steel properties: physical, chemical, mechanical, thermal and engineering. Carbon low-alloy, fast, dies steel, classification, grade, chemical composition, structure, heat treatment, application. Steels for the measuring instrument. Solid-metal alloys, mineral ceramic and polycrystalline superhard, tungstenless, abrasive materials: classification, marking, chemical composition, technology acquisition, use.
Assessment methods and criteria: - current control (30%): written reports for laboratory work, oral examination in defending of reports, colloquium, report on the topic of individual tasks; - final control (70%) exam (written component — 60%, oral component — 10%).
