Learning outcomes: As a result of study of discipline a student must be able to demonstrate the following learning outcomes: know the main groups of non-metallic materials and be able to reasonably to select for their products; know the laws and processes of structure formation in polymer, ceramic, rubber, composite materials and predict their ultimate structure and properties; know the main group of glass ceramics, graphite materials and predict their ultimate structure and properties; be able to analyze the physical phenomena that occur in materials during their production and manufacturing, to predict the impact of structural factors on the performance properties of materials; to be able to predict the formation and changes in the structure of non-metallic materials and products from its in terms of technological and processing operation; know the basics of technology for initial components, processes, and technology of their association in the manufacture of non-metallic materials; know prospects, limits the use, and applicability of non-metallic materials; be able to select and calculate the basic physical, mechanical and operational characteristics of products with non-metallic materials.

Summary of the subject: Key aspects of obtaining polymers. Thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers. Fundamentals of technical processes of products from polymers. The physical and mechanical properties of plastics. The main types of plastics. The physical basis for the formation of sheet thermoplastics. Mechanical processing of plastics. The use of polymeric materials. General information, the composition and classification of rubber. Physical and mechanical properties of rubber, their application. Rubbers of general and special purpose properties. General information, composition and classification of adhesives. Constructional Polymer and rubber adhesives, their properties. Bonding metals, composites, and plastics. General information, the composition and classification of paints. Thermoplastic paints. Coatings based on thermosetting resins. Properties of paint coatings. Basic information about the structure of wood. Wood properties and protection from moisture, rotting and combustion. Physical and mechanical properties of wood. Types of wood. General information, composition and classification of ceramics. Ceramics based on oxides and no-oxide ceramics. Technical ceramics and refractories.
Assessment methods and criteria: written reports of laboratory work - 20 points; lecture and presentation on the topic of the essay - 20 points; final control (exam) - 50 points; the oral part of the exam - 10 points. Final control: exam
