Мета вивчення дисципліни: The purpose of the discipline "Biopolymers in technology and medicine" is to acquaint students with structural features, natural sources of origin, possibilities of biotechnological and synthetic production of biopolymers, their physicochemical and biological properties and functional purpose for use in various industries and medicine.
Завдання: The study of an educational discipline involves the formation of competences in the students of education. General competences: ZK10. The ability to use professional knowledge and practical skills to solve specific tasks in the field of biotechnology and bioengineering. Professional competences: FC 4: Ability to work with biological agents in biotechnological processes (cells of microorganisms, fungi, plants, animals; viruses; cell components; enzymes, immobilized cells and enzymes), to determine their morphology and physiological features. FC 23: Ability to use professional knowledge and practical skills to solve specific tasks in the field of biotechnology and bioengineering.
Learning outcomes: As a result of the study of the academic discipline, the student must be able to demonstrate the following program learning outcomes (LP): Knowledge: ЗН 8: Theoretical foundations of modern technologies using the processes of biosynthesis, biocatalysis, biotransformation, biodetoxification, biodegradation, bioconversion, enzymology, cellular and genetic bioengineering. Skills: UM 4: Work with industrial producers and laboratory bioobjects of biologically active substances of various origins in laboratory and production conditions. Communication skills and the ability for autonomy and responsibility: KOM 2. The ability to use various methods, including modern information technologies, for effective communication at the professional and social levels. AiV 1. Ability to adapt to new situations and make appropriate decisions. AiV 2. The ability to realize the need for lifelong learning in order to deepen the acquired and acquire new professional knowledge. AiV 3. The ability to take responsibility for the work performed, to make decisions independently, to achieve the set goal in compliance with the requirements of professional ethics. AiV 4. Ability to demonstrate understanding of basic environmental principles, occupational health and safety, and their application.

Summary of the subject: Materials that provide knowledge about the structure and properties of biopolymers, their differences from synthetic ones are presented; concepts of structural biology; natural biosynthesis and alternative: biotechnological and synthetic methods of obtaining biopolymers and their analogues; biomedical and industrial application; separate groups of biopolymers are considered: polyprenes, polysaccharides, polypeptides and simple and complex proteins, nucleic acids and inorganic polymers; impact on the environment and prospects for the use of biopolymers.
Опис: Topic 1. Biopolymers, polymers and IMS. Biopolymers and polymers: similarities and differences, characteristics, classification, nomenclature, homogeneity and polydispersity, physicochemical and biological properties. Topic 2. Methods of obtaining polymers. Natural, synthetic and artificial polymers. Chain and stepwise synthesis, structural and chemical modification. Biosynthesis and biotechnological method of production. Topic 3. Biological activity of polymers. Biopolymers and polymers as medical products and components of medicinal products. Biological activity of polymers. Requirements for biomedical polymers. Polymers as excipients, carrier polymers and polymers with their own activity. Ionogenic and non-ionic polymers. Immobilized drugs and controlled release systems. Topic 4. Biogenic surfactants (biosurfactants, biosurfactants). Surface activity of polymers, hydrophilic-lipophilic balance. The main classes of biosurfactants, structure, properties, producers, applications. Topic 5. Natural polymers, main groups. Polyprenes and polysaccharides. Polyprenes: rubber and gutta-percha, structure, properties, biosynthesis and chemical synthesis, application in technology and medicine. Polysaccharides, homo- and heteropolysaccharides, built from residues of hexoses and pentoses (glucose, fructose, galactose, mannose, galacturonic acid; arabinose, etc.) and amino sugars (glucosamine, galactosamine). Structure, properties, application in various branches of industry and medicine. Topic 6. Proteins. Polypeptides, proteins, proteins. Structure, levels of organization, properties, functional purpose. Production methods: biosynthesis, chemical synthesis, biotechnological methods. Topic 7. Nucleic acids. DNA and RNA, structure and levels of organization, properties, biosynthesis, polymerase chain reaction, chemical synthesis, recombinant RNA and DNA. Properties and functional purpose. Topic 8. Application of biologically active polymers in pharmacy. Biopolymers as nanocarriers and vectors. Amphiphilic biopolymers. Biopolymers of complex structure: glycopeptides, phospholipids, nucleoproteins, glycolipids, etc. Cautions for use: toxicity, economic benefit, environmental and ethical issues.
Assessment methods and criteria: The following methods are used during the study of the subject: 1. According to the type of presentation, reproductive (verbal) and information-receptive (visual) are used. 2. According to the level of presentation, the verbal method is used - lecture, story, explanation, conversation, instruction; visual explanatory and illustrative method - demonstration, illustration; practical - laboratory work, solving problems, exercises, situations. 3. According to the level of independent mental activity, methods are used: problem-based teaching, heuristic and research methods. 4. According to the nature of the logic of knowledge, methods are used: analytical, synthetic, analytical-synthetic, inductive, deductive methods. Methods used during classes: - lectures are held in the form of conversation, discussion, using diagrams, various handouts and multimedia technologies; - practical classes are conducted in the form of tasks, partially research and research works; execution of tests; - independent work is carried out in the form of individual reports, their preparation and defense.

Порядок та критерії виставляння балів та оцінок: 100–88 points – (“excellent”) is awarded for a high level of knowledge (some inaccuracies are allowed) of the educational material of the component contained in the main and additional recommended literary sources, the ability to analyze the phenomena being studied in their interrelationship and development, clearly, succinctly, logically, consistently answer the questions, the ability to apply theoretical provisions when solving practical problems; 87–71 points – (“good”) is awarded for a generally correct understanding of the educational material of the component, including calculations, reasoned answers to the questions posed, which, however, contain certain (insignificant) shortcomings, for the ability to apply theoretical provisions when solving practical tasks; 70 – 50 points – (“satisfactory”) awarded for weak knowledge of the component’s educational material, inaccurate or poorly reasoned answers, with a violation of the sequence of presentation, for weak application of theoretical provisions when solving practical problems; 49-26 points - ("not certified" with the possibility of retaking the semester control) is awarded for ignorance of a significant part of the educational material of the component, significant errors in answering questions, inability to apply theoretical provisions when solving practical problems; 25-00 points - ("unsatisfactory" with mandatory re-study) is awarded for ignorance of a significant part of the educational material of the component, significant errors in answering questions, inability to navigate when solving practical problems, ignorance of the main fundamental provisions.
