Learning outcomes: • knowledge of the structure of pro- and eukaryotic cells; •knowledge of morphological, cultural, physiological and biochemical characteristics of microorganisms; • knowledge of classification, genetics, ecology of microorganisms; • knowledge of the structure, distribution and significance of viruses for human health; • basic knowledge of microbiological and sanitary control of production; • knowledge of tasks and areas of modern microbiology.
Required prior and related subjects: Pre-requisites: organic chemistry; biology and physiology with anatomy bases Co-requisites: biological chemistry and molecular biology; biology and physiology with basic anatomy
Summary of the subject: Morphology and diversity of microorganisms. Cultivation and growth of microorganisms. The influence of environmental factors on microorganisms. The metabolism of microorganisms. Alcohol, lactic and propionic acid fermentation. Respiration (Krebs cycle and respiratory chain). Genetics of microorganisms. Genetic recombination of prokaryotes. Regulation of metabolism in microorganisms. Ecology of microorganisms. Distribution of microorganisms in the air, water and soil. Relationship between microorganisms. Normal microflora of human. Clinical Microbiology. Diseases caused by different types of microorganisms.
Assessment methods and criteria: •Current control – 40 points ( written reports on laboratory work, oral examination – 20 points •Latin names of microorganisms (dictation – 10 points) • Interval control - (10 points) •Final control - (60 points, credit), written form – 50 points, oral component – 10 points
