Learning outcomes: • Use knowledge of human anatomy and physiology for further study of other medical and biological disciplines; • Use knowledge of biological chemistry and molecular biology for further study of professionally-oriented disciplines; • Basic knowledge of basic sciences, to the extent necessary for the development of general professional disciplines; • Knowledge of the theoretical foundations of cytology, histology, embryology, physiological patterns of functioning of the human body; • Modern understanding of basic life processes at the molecular level.

Summary of the subject: The chemical composition and structure of cell walls. The cell membranes. The structure of amino acids. Proteins, structure of proteins. Classification of proteins. Classification of lipids. Fatty acids. The functions of lipids. Classification of carbohydrates. The biological function of carbohydrates. Nucleosides, nucleotides and nucleic acids. The structure of nucleic acids. Classification and nomenclature of enzymes. The specificity of enzymes. Regulation of enzymes action. Fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins, their role in living organisms. Hormones of humans and animals. Metabolism. Methods of studying the metabolism. The energy exchange. Metabolism and functions of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, nucleotides. Biosynthesis and catabolism of steroid hormones. Regulation of water-salt metabolism, metabolism of calcium and phosphates, carbohydrates, fats and amino acids. Biochemistry of individual organs and systems. Biochemistry of extracellular matrix. Liver. Disposal of metabolites and exchange of foreign compounds. Blood. Muscles.
Assessment methods and criteria: • Written reports on laboratory works, two individual tasks – 30 points; • Summary control - 70 points ( control, exam): written-oral form.
