Required prior and related subjects: Prerequisites: Cell Biology; Molecular Biology; Bioengineering (Cell and Genetic); Genetics (General and Molecular) Co-requisites: Nanotechnologies and DNA-technologies; Express Diagnostics and Bioavailability of Medicines; Biomonitoring, biosafety, biosecurity and ecological expertise
Summary of the subject: Databases and tools of information technology in biotechnology. Working with scientific literature: Google Scholar, Microsoft Academic Search, Publish or Perish, PubMed, Scopus, Mendeley. Bioinformatics Tools. Information about biopolymers. The sequences of amino acids and nucleotides as the main informative component of bioinformatics. File formats used in bioinformatics. Records of amino acid sequences and nucleotide sequences. Online sources of biological information and databases. Classification and types of databases. Problems of databases: redundancy, errors, problems with openness. Biology databases (GenBank – NCBI, EMBL, SwissProt, PDB - Protein Data Bank, KEGG etc.). Integrated tools for databases applications in the Internet. Online tools for operation with information from biological databases. The combination of information from different databases, including bibliographic and biological. Tools for automated communication of information exchanges with different databases. Evaluation and mechanisms to improve the efficiency of search. Software and online services for bioinformatical analysis. Tools for the analysis of nucleotide and protein sequences.
Assessment methods and criteria: • oral questioning, written reports from laboratory works – 20 points; • final control (exam) – 80 points (written-oral form).
