Learning outcomes: • to understand the foundations of the modern technologies with biotechnological processes; • to know the principles and methods of isolation, cultivation, and identification of microorganisms in biotechnological productions; • to use the knowledge and practical skills to solve specific problems in the field of biotechnology and bioengineering; • to know methods and ways of cultivation, biosynthesis, biotransformation, bioindication and biotesting of biological objects; • to know the methods of monitoring biological objects, quality of raw materials and biotechnological products; to monitor the biotechnology in accordance with regulations to ensure the required quality; • to be able to prepare bioagents for health care and ecology: • to determine and optimize the process parameters of biotechnology.
Required prior and related subjects: Prerequisites: General Microbiology and Virology; Biochemistry; Molecular Biology; General Biotechnology; Pharmaceutical Chemistry; Foundations of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. Co-requisites: Modern Application of Biotechnological Methods; Control Methods in Biotechnology; Nanotechnologies and DNA-technologies.
Summary of the subject: Application of industrial biosynthesis for antibiotics and vitamins production. Antibiotics, definition, the unity of antibiotic activity and classification, the importance for human and veterinary medicine. General principals of antibiotics production. Antibiotics of plant and animal origin. Obtaining of the vitamins by the microbiological method. The technology of production of vitamin B12, vitamin A, ergosterol, riboflavin, ascorbic acid etc.
Assessment methods and criteria: • written reports from laboratory work, oral questioning, final test – 30 points; • final control (test) – 70 points (written-oral form)
