Learning outcomes: • to know the fundamentals of natural science and engineering needed for mastering professional-oriented disciplines; • to know the fundamentals of chemistry of natural, pharmaceutical, toxico-carcinogenic and other biologically active substances; structure and properties of inorganic, organic and bioorganic compounds; methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries; • to know the fundamentals of the structure and functioning of microorganisms, plant and animal cells and their components; • be able to monitor biological objects, quality of raw materials and finished products of biotechnological production; to conduct a qualitative and quantitative analysis of inorganic, organic and biological substances.

Summary of the subject: The main classes of natural bioactive substances. The influence of biologically active substances on the human body. Primary and secondary metabolites, minerals. Substances of primary metabolism (classification, structure and chemical properties, methods of detection and quantification of plant material, application fields of carbohydrates, fatty oils). Secondary metabolites (classification, structure and chemical properties, methods of detection and quantification of plant material, application fields of vitamins, terpenoids, alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, phenolic compounds and their glycosides, coumarins, flavonoids, tannins).
Assessment methods and criteria: • written reports from laboratory work, oral interviews, individual work, control test - 40 points, • final evaluation (control measure - examination), written-oral form – 60 points
