Learning outcomes: • identify the causal links between the development of society and manifestations of socio-economic problems in different categories of the population; • apply information collection methods: document analysis, surveys and observation; • ability to apply statistical, methodical and normative base of the social protection system; • show readiness to interact with colleagues at work, take management decisions in the organization of work of executors; • analyze the effectiveness of socio-economic support of the population and make appropriate adjustments within the competence; • analyze and assess the level of material and economic protection of different categories of people; • determine the content of cooperation with organizations and institutions in order to involve them in social protection of the population; • explain actual processes in the social sphere and social welfare; • use appropriate scientific researches and apply research professional skills in providing social assistance.

Summary of the subject: Definitions, goals, characteristics and principles of social development. History of social development. Strategies of social development. Institutional approach and its three program features. The concept of social capital. The concept of social security is its basic principles and objectives. Approaches to the formation of social welfare. The evolution of social security systems in Europe. Social security and economic development: mechanisms of interaction. Basic concepts and models of social security. Continental model of social security (Germany, France). Anglo-Saxon model of social security (UK). Scandinavian model of social security (Sweden). Southern European model of social security (Italy). American model of social security (USA, Canada). Pension provision. Medical Insurance. Unemployment insurance. Insurance against accidents at work. Temporary health insurance. Social assistance. Features of the functional organization of the social security system in Ukraine. Improvement of the Ukrainian system of pension provision, social and medical insurance. Poverty and its scale. Poverty in developed capitalist countries and in Third World countries. Poverty in post-socialist countries. Definition of globalization and its consequences. The impact of global problems on social work at different levels. Ways to strengthen the international aspect of social work. Intergovernmental and volunteer organizations. International cooperation. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Protecting the most vulnerable segments of the population.
Assessment methods and criteria: • Current control: (40%): laboratory work, oral examination, individual research work. • Final control: (60%): credit.
