Learning outcomes: LO03. To know the nature of international cooperation, the nature of interaction between international actors, the ratio of governmental and non-governmental actors in world politics. LO05. To know the nature and mechanisms of international communications. LO10. To speak fluently in the native and foreign languages at the professional level required for professional discussion, preparation of analytical and research documents. LO13. To conduct a professional discussion on the problems of international relations, international communications, regional studies, foreign policy, argue their position, respect opponents and their views. LO15. To understand and apply current legislation, international regulations and agreements, reference materials, current standards and specifications, etc. to solve complex specialized problems of international relations, public communications and regional studies. LO18. To know the job responsibilities of the diplomatic and consular staff, the rules of diplomatic protocol and etiquette used in professional communications. Communication: COM1. the ability to defend the national interests of Ukraine in communications, to be able to combine a humanistic, socially responsible and patriotic position. COM4. the ability to use various methods, in particular information technologies, for effective communication at the professional and social levels, to adapt to new situations and make decisions. COM5. to work effectively both individually and as part of a team. Autonomy and responsibility: AandV1. The ability to argue the choice of mechanisms for solving professional problems, critically evaluate the obtained results and defend the decisions made. AandV3. The ability to take responsibility for the work performed and achieve the set goal according to the requirements of professional ethics.
Required prior and related subjects: • Prerequisites: Theory of International Relations; International Organizations; Conflict Studies and Negotiation Theory. • Сo-requisites: Foreign Policy of Ukraine; Diplomatic Protocol and Etiquette; Public Diplomacy.
Summary of the subject: General theoretical approaches to diplomacy. Organization of work in a diplomatic mission. The establishment of diplomatic relations. Diplomatic functions and their means of fulfillment. Diplomatic privileges and immunities. Activities of special missions. Consular posts. Diplomatic correspondence. Official diplomatic contacts and diplomatic talks. Diplomatic negotiations and international conferences. Techniques of diplomatic negotiations. International treaties and treaty practice. Information activity of diplomatic mission and relations with media in a receiving state. Diplomatic protocol and etiquette. International organizations and multilateral diplomacy.
Assessment methods and criteria: • Formative assessment (40%): oral questioning, answers in seminars, testing, individual work. • Summative assessment (60%): examination (multilevel testing, oral component).
