Learning outcomes: • knowledge of structure and vital activity of a cell as the smallest basic unit of living which is inherent of reproduction, metabolism, reactivity and variability; • operating of research methods of cell ultrastructure and living cells, identification of chemical components and cell organelles; • skills to analyze the obtained results, to determine the dependence of the functional state of a cell on structural features of cell organelles; to operate cytological terminology; to use obtained knowledge of cell biology as a basis for further study of other disciplines.

Summary of the subject: Basic concepts and terminology of Cytology. Methods of studying cells. Morphophysiological features of cells of different cell types. Chemical organization of cells. Common characteristics of cell structure. Plans of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structure. Outside cell membrane structures. The biological membrane. Structure and functions of cytoplasm. Single-membrane organelles of the cell; the relationship of single-membrane organelles in the cell. Double-membrane organelles of the cell; structure and function of a nucleus; protein biosynthesis. Non-membrane organelles. Intracellular inclusions. The cytoskeleton. The cell metabolism. The cell reproduction. The phenomenon of apoptosis.
Assessment methods and criteria: • current control: written reports for laboratory works, oral examination, written tests (40%) • summary control: examination (exam) written-oral form (60%)
