Learning outcomes: • knowledge of main principles, laws and patterns of general and molecular genetics; • theoretical knowledge of the structure and functioning of a gene, molecular organization of genetic processes, mechanisms of storage, transmission and implementation of genetic information, the importance of genetics as the theoretical basis of selection and biotechnology; • operating of cytogenetic research methods, methods of human genetics, methods of somatic cell hybridization, methods of molecular genetics and genetic engineering; • skills to apply knowledge in practice while developing and providing technological processes in both traditional biotechnology industries and in the priority areas of modern biotechnology.

Summary of the subject: Basic genetic concepts. The structure and functions of chromosomes. The laws of heredity. Mendel's laws. Interaction of genes. Mechanisms of sex determination. Linkage groups and crossing over. Patterns of inheritance of cytoplasmic genes. Variability. The process of mutagenesis. Genetic processes at the level of organism and population. The structure and functions of the gene. Features of the genome organization in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Regulation of gene action. The genetic fundamentals of selection. Biological and social heredity. Gene pool care.
Assessment methods and criteria: • current control: written reports for laboratory works, oral examination, written tests (40%) • summary control: examination (exam) written-oral form (60%)
