Learning outcomes: • Know the basic knowledge of fundamental sciences, to the extent necessary for learning of general professional disciplines. • Know the basic knowledge of natural sciences and engineeeering, needed for learning of professionally oriented disciplines. • Know the implementing basics of chemistry of natural, pharmaceutical, toxemia-carcinogenic and other biologically active substances. structure and properties of inorganic, organic and bioorganic compounds, and methods of their qualitative and quantitative analysis in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries • Know the structure, morphology, physiology, biochemistry and genetics of biological objects and the possibilities of experimental research in microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology and so on. • Know the fundamentals of the structure and functioning of microorganisms, plant and animal cell and their components.
Required prior and related subjects: Prerequisites: Biology of cells, Biochemistry, Anatomy, physiology and diagnosis of a man Co-requisites: General Microbiology and Virology, Genetics, Pharmaceutical chemistry, Fundamentals of enzymology and immobilization, Theoretical basics of immunology.
Summary of the subject: The role of biochemistry and molecular biology in modern biotechnology and medicine. The structure of the cell walls of plant and microbial cells. The structure of proteins, lipids and polysaccharides of cell walls; relation of structure and function. The main idea of the transfer of organic and inorganic substances through the membrane. The structure of nucleic acids. Pyrimidine and purine bases. The primary structure of nucleic acids. Secondary structure of DNA. Synthesis of DNA. The physical properties of DNA. Molecular heterogeneity and the phenomenon of reverse DNA denaturation. Renaturation and hybridization of DNA and RNA. The synthesis of RNA. Macromolecular structure of RNA. The structure of proteins. The classification of types of proteins macromolecular structure. The functions of proteins. Function of active transport. Transport RNA. The reaction of amino acids. The general scheme of protein synthesis. The structure of ribosomes and protein synthesis. Informational RNA and protein synthesis.
Assessment methods and criteria: • Written reports on laboratory works, two individual tasks – 30 points; • Summary control - 70 points ( control, exam): written-oral form.
