Learning outcomes: As a result of studying the discipline, a specialist must know: purpose, technological process of traditional power stations; sources of energy for traditional and non-traditional energy; be able to: evaluate the effects of the impact of electricity and heat production on traditional power plants; use reference literature; evaluate the prospects and economic feasibility of using non-traditional and renewable energy sources. acquire competencies: the ability to put into practice knowledge of electricity generation at various types of power plants; the ability to think creatively when tackling non-traditional energy sources; basic knowledge of scientific concepts, theories and methods for understanding the operating principles of power plant equipment; apply knowledge and ability to identify classify and describe the operation of non-conventional power plants.
Required prior and related subjects: Prerequisites: physics: transformation of basic types of energy; energy conservation law; energy performance of electromagnetic radiation; chemistry: processes of oxidation of organic substances; the concept of material balance; thermal balance; measures to influence the quantitative characteristics of the harmful emissions of reaction products; basics of electricity use: technological processes of heat and electricity use, ways of their production and transformation.
Summary of the subject: General characteristics of energy use in the world economy; transformation of different types of energy into electricity; energy and energy resources of traditional energy; thermal power plants, thermal power plants and their environmental impact; physical bases of nuclear reactors functioning and their impact on the environment; the energy potential of the water stream; types of hydroelectric power stations; inflow and outflow hydropower; the environmental impact of different types of hydropower plants; solar energy, direct conversion of solar energy into electrical energy; thermodynamic SES; prospects of SES development; wind energy parameters; electricity production at wind farms; bioenergy; thermal disposal of household waste; hydrogen energy; use of coal mine methane; use of geothermal energy; use of landfill methane and the like.
Assessment methods and criteria: Current control (100%); control during practical classes, control work (60%); knowledge control (40%); differentiated credit.
